Gestalt.in.Design

A few good examples which have Gestalt elements incorporated in them...

SIMILARITY

This comes to play when we put things together into groups when they correspond with each other.

In the above example,  6 groups of white blocks with black lines and 6 groups of black blocks with white lines have been incorporated into this design. This is a good example of similarity since its copies of the same thing that's been depicted in different ways - black & white and rotation.

CLOSURE
CLOSURE

Basic closure is depicted when we close objects that are not yet complete. It's almost like we are predicting what the complete object would look like. We complete the object using our own views.

In the above example one can depict it as a circle. However, it's actually just spikes that have been grouped together. The whole thing is a group of different-sized spikes arranged in such a way that it creates a perception of a circle.

Can you see the invisible circle??

PROXIMITY

When we see a group of objects, we tend to see them as groups. This is called GROUPING.

In the above example, the circles and spots have been grouped together. It's fairly simple, the black spots forming a group while the yellow rows of circles in the background helps form the group. The black spots look the same and they're grouped together.

Notice how the shapes have been grouped together?
What do all of these spots used to depict??

FIGURE & GROUND

Do you see an old man?
Or do you see a woman with a baby, an old man with a hat and a dog lying on the street??

SYMMETRY

Symmetry may be found every where we walk -
even when you take a look at the Taj Mahal in this image below.

Something may be characterized as being symmetrical if it's equal on both sides once it's been split in half.

Visual Perception (Optical illusion)

Caution: You might feel dizzy after staring at this for a long time
The four images above are called "optical illusions". Optical illusion is when we see something in a way that totally differs from what the reality of the object actually is. Like in the above example, you see dots, but matter of fact, there are actually none!!

Examples:

1. Continuity

A spiral ring. I think this is a good example of continuity as the spiral is a never-ending curve. It's a continuous figure.

2. Similarity

The above example represents similarity since it contains different versions/depictions of the same thing. In here, colour has been used to create similarity.

3. Proximity

In this example, the rows and rows of stones have been grouped together into many different subgroups. Grouping - what proximity is all about.

4. Figure & ground

Figure & ground has been represented in this image via the background which has been used to depict the subject. Also, light and dark plays a major role.

5. Closure

This may be seen as a diamond. However, it may represent the principle "closure" as our eyes also recognize the shapes within the positive space - triangles.

6. Symmetry

When we look at things we see them as symmetrical shapes that form around the center.

Discovery...

This is my idea of what the Gestalt theorum is...

It's about the visual perception of things, how humans put together a picture to make it a "unified whole".

The Gestalt theorum was discovered by a group of psychologists in Germany who studied perceptual organization.
Gestalt means literally means an "organized whole" , when parts identified individually have different characteristics to the whole. It's about how we look at things, how we are not concious of the parts but the whole object on its own. Parts are of secondary importance eventhough they may be clearly seen.

Here's an example

This is the vase/face profile. It's interesting how our eyes see things.

There are six principles of Gestalt theory:

Proximity

The principle of proximity states that things which are closer together will be seen as belonging together.

For example, the four squares on the left may be seen as one group while the four squares on the right may be seen as another group.

Similarity

The principle of similarity states that things which share visual characteristics such as shape, size, color, texture, value or orientation will be seen as belonging together.

For example, in the above example, there features three groups of white circles and three groups of black circles arranged in lines.

Continuation

The principle of continuity predicts the preference for continuous figures. We see the figure as two crossed lines instead of 4 lines meeting at the center.

For example, the dots that forms lines above may seem like 2 lines. However, they are four lines that meet in the center.

Closure

A tendency to close simple figures. This results in a effect of filling in missing information or organizing information which is present to make a whole

In the above example, one sees three pac mans or three circles with "v" cuts. However, if you look more carefully ones eyes can actually detect a triangle there formed by the three pac mans.

Symmetry

The principle of the symmetrical figure is that it is seen as a closed figure.

In the above example, one would be able to tell whether it's symmetrical or not by splitting the image in half.

Figure & Ground

It's a simple perception based on contrast to include abstract (non-visual) concepts e.g light and dark, positive and negative space etc.

In the example above, the human eye may first depict it as a young lady wearing a fur coat whereas it may also be depicted as an old lady with a hooked nose.
